introduction

From a very early age, I learned to not take things in life at face value. There is always another side (or sides) to a story. You just have to look deeper...

I am Korean American and was born in Seoul, South Korea. People comment on how "good" my English is. People are thrown off when they see me with my parents, who are both Caucasian.

I was adopted when I was 3 months old and came to the United States, where I grew up in Michigan and have lived for the past 20 years of my life. My cultural identity and physical identity often do not line up in ways that society expects them to. When it comes to identifying myself to and from others, I am faced with a complex process.

To me, identity is who you are and what makes you yourself - fluid concepts that are difficult to contain. Instead of struggling to define identity, I like to express it. The music that I listen to and the clothes that I wear help characterize and portray my identity to the outside world.

For the three playlists that I have chosen, I focus on what constructs musical identities and how these identities are expressed both sonically and visually. In doing so, I will be examining the relationship between music and fashion in a specific period of time - The Russian Ballets from 1909-1929, and in a different spatial location - the runways of New York Fashion Week. For my personal audiotopic playlist, I will look at my own approach to the sonic and visual representations of my identity.
